If it hasn’t been evident before, I hope it is now– I am a proud Millennial. I am an advocate for Millennials. Unfortunately, Millennials get a bad reputation but I am sure that is that case with most rising-star generations. Being a Millennial is tough work, everyone is always downplaying your abilities and shooing you to the wayside. To make an impact, we need to focus on the positives. An article written by Global CEO of Deloitte Touche Tohmastu Limited, Barry Slazberg, recently wrote an article about Millenials. To be honest, going into the article I was skeptical, however, after reading the article I was pleasantly surprised.

Their findings in a nutshell

Millennials want to make a difference

Millennials want to be leaders

Millennials want to be innovative

Millennials expect businesses to care

I support all of these findings. As a Millennial, I find it hard to stick with things that have always been. I want to pave my own path and create my own future. Sure, it’s not going to be easy to create my own path, but then again who said life was easy?

Often, I google: “Millennial”. I want to see what’s up with my generation. More often than not, there is bad news with the small search of one simple word. Today, I found an article entitled: A Survial Guide to Working with Millennials. This article was published on The Wall Street Jorunal’s website.

Frankly, I’m fed up.

I don’t understand how my generation can generate so much negative energy. There There are so many negative connotations about Millennials out there, it’s mind-blowing. Truly, I don’t understand what my generation did to get such a bad rep. Is this something all generations face from the precednets?

The aritcle starts off by saying:  What’s the hardest part about working with younger employees, and what’s the best way to deal with it? “The kids today…” That’s the phrase used in one form or another by every generation looking at the “new kids” joining the workforce. Here are three tips for older employees to survive and thrive in a multigenerational workplace. 

It goes into telling you what to expect and how to deal with “us.” Their advice? “Take a New Look at Work,” “Teach and be Taught” and “Stay Flexible.” Overall, this advice can be used for anyone going into a workplace, not just people who will be working directly with Millennials.

I am tired of Millennials being pinned as the bad person. The worst part is, as the saying goes, one person ruins it for everyone.  After reading the comments on this article, one from Grumpy Boomer reads, About those Millennials…the ones I’ve met (and there are quite a few of them) are smart, mentally agile, and capable. And some of their approaches are superior – the meetings mentioned in the article being one example. I find it amazing how my fellow boomers have transitioned from being rude and rowdy (yes, we were, in the eyes of the previous generations) into models of staid propriety – while we find issue with the Millennials for all manner of supposed shortcomings (the same ones we were guilty of a few decades ago). The Millennials will do fine. And their creativity just might lead to a golden age that’s better than has ever been seen before.

These are the types of people we, Millennials, need on our side. Shout out to Grumpy Boomer for respecting a yonger generation!

After reading this article, I was blown away. This article is the perfect way to describe the Millennial generation. Sure, I have a biased opinion because I am a Millennial but this article focuses less on the “me, me, me” aspect of my generation and it hones in on the compassion.

Maybe a few of these teasers will entice you enough to read the article:

  • Only 7% of people believe Millennials are more generous than previous generations
  • 56% of Millennials have given a charitable gift, a new survey shows
  • Organizations need to learn to work with this generation to figure out how Millennials can get involved on small levels
  • Millennials are attracted to the causes, but organizations struggle with connecting with them on recommitting to the cause

Honestly, take a look at the article especially if you represent this awesome generation. USA Today does an awesome job reporting on the topic of giving in the Millennial generation. Take a read, Millennials: The Giving Generation?

You have to check-out this article if you are a Millennial! The Idaho State Journal says that Millennials take a new approach to work-life balance, and I couldn’t agree more!

As said in the article, Millennials continue to be at the forefront of achieving work-life balance – utilizing business travel to discover new cities, explore local cultures, taste authentic cuisines and connect with new people across the country and around the globe. Let’s keep this going. If you have to travel for work, why not have fun and reap the benefits while doing it? Who said work can’t be fun?

Here are a few things you can do to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Sure it’s hard to say no, but in order for you to perform at 110% every day on the job, for your boss and for your team you need to implement this work-life balance. Trust me, it will do you wonders.

Schedule downtime

  • This one is key. I use to never do this for myself, and now I do. It’s honestly changed everything. Now that I actually have “me” time and time to relax it’s a beautiful thing. Maybe its 5 minutes of meditation, reading a book, going on that run, or just waking up ten minutes before you would normally

Cut out valueless things

  • Perfect examples for me: Snapchat and trashy magazines. I use to read Cosmo and Entertainment all the time. I was up on my pop-culture, but it was draining my time and in-turn it was draining me. My friends will be the first to tell you that I’m dumber than a sack of rocks when it comes to anyone famous, specifically TV shows and movies. Snapchat, sure it’s fun, but it sucks up all my time.

Negatives

  • Get rid of people who are bogging you down. It is detrimental to your health both physically and mentally. It’s not fair to you, and it’s stressing you out. Giving these people 5 minutes, is sucking up more time than you already know and they are dragging you onto the negative train as well. Sure we all complain, but don’t make it a habit!

Take a minute…for yourself

  • Just like the downtime, you need to give yourself a few minutes at work as well. Get up, move around! Take a walk when it’s nice out, or reward yourself with reading a Thought Catalog article or something on Thrillist. (Well, those would be my choices)

Lighten the load

  • Hello, outsourcing! When you are treading in water because your boss has you doing 900 things at once, think– is there anyone else working on this that can help me out? The answer more likely than not, is yes! Ask for help. Not asking is only hurting you and the product of your work

Stop reinventing the wheel

  • This one is self-explanatory. When you have a project to do, see if it’s something you’ve done before, or something similar– see what you can use from past projects, articles and so on to lessen your load.

Overall these are a few things I started to implement into my life. Of course it’s hard to say no to my boss when she asks me to stay late, but she is also very respectful of the fact that I have a life and she will in turn let me come in late/go home early the next day. If you let your work consume you, you’re wasting the life you have in an office–don’t you want to get out there an explore?
