Birthdays are an amazing thing. Sure, everyone has one, but it’s about the memories and the execution of the day which make it a special thing. Obviously a birthday is a day that comes once a year and it is when a person celebrates the anniversary of his/her birth. It’s not like I need to tell you, but Birthdays are celebrated often with a gift, party or/and a rite of passage.

Birthdays have always been a big deal to me and I don’t know why. Today is an even bigger deal. No, it’s not my birthday but it is Matt’s! This is the first year I get to celebrate his H177birthday with him in our five years of knowing each other can you believe that?

Boyfriend-

I’m truly blessed to have you in my life, as nothing could be more special than the day when you came into this world. Even when skies are gray, you brighten every day. You will always be the love and light in my life. I couldn’t be more thrilled to celebrate this wonderful day with you. Here’s to wishing you a joyous birthday. I love you.

Matt, this one’s for you. I love you #CTBOT

Recently, I stumbled upon this song, Sunshine & Whiskey by Frankie Ballard. The beat is great. The song feels like summer. The tune will make you tap your feet, and you will definitely be thinking of that special someone by the end of the song.

You hit me like fire, shot me like a bullet.
Burned me up and down, no way to cool it.
But every time you kiss me it’s like sunshine and whiskey.
It’s like a bottle of Jack straight to the head.
One shot, two shot, copper tone red.
Every time you kiss me it’s like sunshine and whiskey.

I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do!

sisters

Maybe it’s a coincidence, but maybe it’s not. The other day I was cleaning and I came across some papers and one happened to be a card from my sister. She mailed me a card a few weeks after I moved into my freshman dorm. Screen Shot 2014-04-26 at 10.21.05 AMRereading the card it brought back many memories. My sister is heartfelt and sweet, and you can see that in the card.

After watching Frozen last night, it brings home the point of the movie that true love can come in any form. The love of a sister can be true love, too. I’m lucky to have a sister like Lauren.

I love you, sissy!

embrace it

I bleed red and white, green and gold, and blue and gold. I will never be able to shake those long “O’s.” Despite the season, the Badgers, Brewers and Packers are always on my radar. I can never get enough cheese, and PBR is my kind of beer. I can pronounce any place you point to on the map, and I will argue that we have more lakes than Minnesotawisconsin pride.

Folks, Wisconsin is my home and it always will be. For the past three years, I have lived in DC and I still get butterflies when I land in the motherland. I still get excited when I see a fellow Wisconsinite walking around DC repping my state. Wisconsin has state pride like I’ve never seen or experienced before. I know Texas would argue they have the most state pride, but I respectfully disagree. Wisconsin has camaraderie.

I’m sure it’s evident that I have undying state pride and love for Wisconsin, and frankly, that’s a burning passion that I will always have.

Over the weekend, I got in a heated argument with a friends’ friend I met. As we were making introductions and creating small talk, (let’s call him) Bill asked me where I was from and I proudly exclaimed, “WISCONSIN!” I countered and asked him where he was from. After much hesitation he answered, “New York…City.” With his response, this was something I was not pleased with or something that I was going to let stand by the wayside, I again asked again, “No, where are you really from?” Bill again hesitated and finally responded, “Chicago.” The conversation goes like this for a while and I finally get Bill to tell me where he is from after I told him I was very familiar with the “Chicago-area.”

I will give you the same talk that I dished out to Bill on Saturday night. Be proud of where you are from. Take pride in your upbringing and where you came from. Where you are from has a lot to do with who you are now. And truth be told, being a coward about your roots is almost an insult to your parents and how they raised you.

When you think of Wisconsin, what comes to mind? Probably the Green Bay Packers and cheese, and with good reason. The Packers are a storied NFL franchise, but as the foam cheese hats the Packers fans wear indicate, the real pride of Wisconsin are the people, the sports, the seasons, the beer, the cheese and the list will only continue.

Until the day I die, I bleed Wisconsin through and through. If it wasn’t for my Wisconsin and Midwestern upbringing, a lot would be different and I sincerely take pride in being from the great state of Wisconsin and being a true Midwestern.

Most of you know that I am a sucker for Justin Timberlake and honestly, who isn’t? Yesterday, JT premiered his new video “Not a Bad Thing” on Ellen. The video also doubles as a documentary about the search for a couple who got engaged on the Long Island Railroad to “Not a Bad Thing”.

Throughout the video documentarians search New York City for this mystery couple.  The video also includes heartwarming interviews with couples about their own proposals, as well as the struggles and rewards of finding love, or letting love find you. The search is still on for this missing couple, you can follow the breaking action one twitter with the hashtag, #haveyouseenthiscouple. Let’s find this couple so Timberlake can finally meet them.

At least for now, it seems, the search for a true love continues.

spring training

Much like Matt, I love baseball. I wish I could say I love it just as much as he does, but I don’t think that is humanly possible…for anyone. The start of baseball is finally here. Read below to learn more about Matt’s love for baseball.

& the joy of baseball

guest blog presented by: Matthew D. Shalbrack

Welcome to my favorite time of the year. Why is it my favorite time of the year you may ask? It’s because baseball is finally back. The smell of freshly cut grass, the taste of hot dogs and ranch sunflower seeds, the loud roar of the crowd, the heckler down the first baseline who won’t stop jeering Ryan Braun for taking steroids, the crack of the bat and the snap of the catcher’s mitt after receiving a 98 mph fastball – those are some of the greatest sounds, smells and tastes associated with baseball season now here.

Baseball is in my blood. It always has been, ever since the first time my Dad put a baby baseball glove in my crib as an infant. I pretty much eat, sleep and breathe baseball. I’m a diehard Cubs fan, (or the “Little Bears” as Kendal Ann likes to call them) with every season being an up-and-down rollercoaster ride.

In the last two days, I’ve watched four Spring Training games. For me, baseball is baseball. I don’t care if the Opening Day starters are playing or if the prospects or Non-Roster Invitees are playing, I’ll watch it. For example, I’m currently watching the Washington Nationals versus New York Mets. In 30 minutes, I’ll be flipping to the Chicago Cubs versus Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim game. Like I said, I love baseball.

Hip hip hooray for baseball being back on TV. I know Spring Training doesn’t mean much, but it’s the last time from now until November where there won’t be baseball on TV. That right there brings joy to my heart.

a short story

Finley

you can find me at: @K_AnnM | Insta | LinkedIn

All the kids turned and pointed at poor Finley. Finley was always friendly and free-hearted. It was just a mistake. “Why were they laughing,” he would ask himself. Finley always knew he was different, but never truly understood why until he clumsily fumbled onto the metro platform, with much embarrassment. Finley picked up his bag and carried on his merry way, but this time he clutchimagesed onto his tail ensuring it was close to his body. Above all he never wanted to be dragon-ing his heart around. He never meant to hit anyone with his cumbersome tail.

Waiting for the train to arrive Finley daydreamed, much liked he did when he was growing up.  Finley always knew he was different, but he didn’t understand why people pointed and poked fun at him and his heart-tipped tail. As daydreaming was Finley’s escape from his heart-tipped tail, he fell into a dazzling daydream.

The daydream emerged and Finley dreamt of his differences being something that brought people together, rather than bring them apart–like they did in real life. Finley dreamed of his heart-tipped trail being magic! Sure, he was different but different doesn’t have to be bad. Much like Cupid who helps people fall in love, in this dream, Finley did, too! His tail was the culprit of making people fall in love. With one wack of his monstrous tail, strangers became friends, and friends became lovers. It didn’t matter who Finley tapped with this tail, everyone would fall in love. Finley dreamed of much love being in the world.

As a train conductor zoomed by with the air horn blasting, Finley popped out of his dream, but little did he know his dream was becoming a reality. Finley searched around to find when the next train would be coming to the National Airport Metro Platform, but all he could see were smiles and beaming hearts. It seems that dreams do come true.

Thanks to Finley, believing in his differences and his heart-tipped tail there is a clumsy cupid out there on the loose and who knows when he will strike again.

confessions

it must be wednesday…

CONFESSIONS! About two years ago, I started this thing called Confession Wednesday. I don’t have answers when it comes to “why” or logistics of the whole Confession Wednesday, but I can tell you this, it’s fun, it’s exhilarating and it’s something I enjoy doing.

When it comes to the confessions it can be big or small, you can post it on social media or just directly tell the person; Confession Wednesday has no rules, in fact, it doesn’t even need to be a Wednesday! This morning, after waking up and exchanging Valentine’s day presents with Matt, I told him my confession. The confession was most appropriate because it was all over my hands, it was finally complete. The perfect Valentine’s Day card about Valentine’s Day three years ago. Three years ago, would have been the one (of many) perfect time that Matt and I could have dated, but as always it never worked out.

Let me take you back three years and a few days. I sat in my college apartment, listening to music, coloring. After my desk was full of marker and crayon marks and I had glue all over my hands, it was finally complete. The perfect Valentine’s Day card. Three years ago, I made Matt this Valentine (see the picture), but I never gave it to him. The moment wasn’t right.

Three years later, (now present time) we are together. Time is a precious thing, and I couldn’t be happier that we finally found the perfect time to get together. Alligator-Valentine

I confessed this small little confession to Matt this morning, do you have one to tell someone?
