it makes you work harder

If you don’t take chances, you will never get rejected. Sure, rejection is a scary thing and yes, we are all scared of it. In the long run, rejection pushes us to our dreams and goals. Without rejection, would you be the best you can be? Take a look at this. It’s a rejection letter that Bono got back in 1979. What I am trying to say is, everyone has been rejected in some fashion or another, but it doesn’t stop you dead in your tracks. Thanks to this rejection letter Bono received, we are now graced with such ( dare I say it, even better) music than he was producing prior to 1979.  u2

After listening to The Snap Judgement 2013 Look Back Special, it all dawned on me. If I want people to believe in me, I have to believe in myself. That also means you need to bet on yourself by going all in.  Believing in yourself isn’t something that should be taken with a light heart, believing in yourself is a full-time commitment.

One segment in particular, How ‘Going For Broke’, Launched Homeboy Sandman’s Career talked about how Homeboy Sandman finally decided to take his music career full-time. First, his rhymes weren’t coming that expensive NYC rent, so he found himself staring down five grand in debt with an eviction a possibility. Homebody Sandman talks about how going for broke is all about believing in yourself before anybody else does.

new year

As you all know by now, Matt has a blog. Matt’s blog is pretty awesome, but sometimes it is a little neglected so I push him to write more. I push him because I know he enjoys writing, but maintaining a blog is hard work– and I like omg it’s kendal ann to be a creative outlet for others, not just myself. Often I ask Matt to write on a particular topic, but other times he will come to me with ideas, like this one: New Year’s Resolutions; shocking for this time of year, right? Oh please, just because you saw the words New Years Resolution doesn’t mean you are going to stop reading. Trust me this is an awesome post. Anyway, this is an awesome post and I am really excited to see what will happen in 2014. I think he is, too! Setting NYR isn’t a bad thing, I used to be like Matt never making resolutions, but for some reason this just just seems different.

new goals

With it being after the first of the year, people have already had their New Year’s Resolutions in full swing (hopefully) for a few days now. Resolutions such as working out more, cooking healthier, spending less and so on are some of the most common resolutions that I’ve heard of, but I feel like they’re some of the most common resolutions that also never fully come to fruition.

One thing that I’ve never done is set a resolution for the New Year. Let me give you a second to pick your jaw up from the floor. Okay. Let’s go. Never have I ever set a New Year’s resolution mainly because I’ve always lived my life the way I’ve wanted to do it. Sure, I could use a few reps in the gym or stand to not spend as much money on things, but at the same time, I’m perfectly happy living my life the way I currently do.

This year won’t be any different in terms of not making New Year’s resolutions. I have none. At the same time, I still want to grow as a person and I know that I need to make some changes in order to help myself grow and mature more. So, I’ve come up with three things that I want to work at more during this upcoming year.

  1. Shoot more photos, both digital and film, with the film being black and white.
  2. Read more books.
  3. Write more.

With the first one on my list, I want to get back into the photography realm once again. I used to shoot every day for my job, but now that I don’t work there anymore, I haven’t picked up my camera since August. I miss it. Not only do I miss taking photos, I just miss the thrill of going on a walk, camera in hand, and just looking for interesting (to me) things to photograph. I really also want to break out my Dad’s Nikon F-3 and shoot some black and white photos. There’s just something about a black and white photo that gets me every time.

As a child, I read everything. I read the newspaper with my cereal, I read the box of the cereal, I read magazines and books and I was read to before I went to sleep each night. But as I got older, life happened more, making it harder to curl up with a book each night. In 2014, I want to finish a new book each month. I’m the type of person who doesn’t like to start a book and not finish it (unless I’m really not into it). So today, I finished the last book I was reading (which I started in November) and moved onto my January 2014 book. Here’s to reading more!

Finally, Kendal Ann has been putting out a new blog post each day and will so until she hits 365 blog posts – one for each day of a year. I started to get on that path, but once again, life happened and I was unable to keep it going. So I want to make a better attempt to write more during the coming year. Maybe not put out a blog post a day, but try and put a few out a week in order to keep my brain going and wet my whistle with some creativity.

Have you ever made a New Year’s resolution? If so, why? Did you follow through with it? If not, why?

Resolutions are too formal. Goals are more fun and really make you think about the smaller things that you have a tendency to miss out on when life happens.

After dragging my feet and having a ho-hum attitude towards my job search and current job situation, the perfect pep talk happened. This pep talk could not have occurred at a more perfect moment. 1533888_601591936544053_1909135317_nNow, I cannot tell you the exact conversation, but let’s just say the following phrase sums it up, “It might take a year, it might take a day, but what’s meant to be will always find its way.”

I have faith that everything will work out exactly how it is supposed to. Things will all fall into place and everything will be great. But keep this in mind, in order for everything to work out (no matter how long it takes), you have to keep pushing, you have to be your biggest fan, and you have to get up every time after you’re knocked down.

Folks, don’t take little things for granted. One conversation could change everything – all you have to do is listen.

when I’ve made it

I was going through some emails today and I found that was titled, “This is When I Know You Made it”. After reading that subject line, I was so intrigued. I had to open it. Upon opening the email, it was a short sentence that said: look at this article— I am sure you will do the same thing, and this is when I will know you made it.

Honestly, this couldn’t be more true. With my love for sharks, this would be the coolest thing to have. Could you even imagine having a little aquarium in your house? I cannot wait for the day when I made it, so I can have sharks swimming around! (In all seriousness though, I don’t want a shark tank, I would just rather go on scuba excursions and drive with them in their natural habitat. It’s still pretty awesome though!)

a few words of wisdom

Do you remember those nonsense chain emails that your friends and parents use to send you? More often than not when my mom would partake in them, she didn’t expect me to pass them along. She was sending me them for the message. I kept one of the emails in particular. I went back to read it, and something is compelling me to share it today. Enjoy.

Let me note by saying this is a little prayer. If you aren’t religious or a person of faith, that’s not the point. The reason I wanted to share this was the first sentence. Please, focus on the first sentence. It is beyond true, and I think this is the sign that you are searching for.

“To get something you never had, you have to do something you never  did” When God takes something from your grasp. He’s not punishing you,  but merely opening your hands to receive something better. Concentrate on  this sentence. “The will of God will never take you where the Grace of  God will not protect you.” Something good will happen to you today,  something that you have been waiting to hear. Just 27  Words, ‘God our Father, walk through my house and take away all my worries  and illnesses and please watch over and heal my family in your name, Amen.’  This prayer is so powerful.

As a Catholic, I do believe that prayer is a powerful thing and I also believe in chasing your dreams. If there is something you want, go after it. The only chances you miss are the opportunities you don’t take. Have confidence in yourself.

no makeup november

& we’re off

Men have No Shave November, which is awesome. Cool, grow a crazy beard and cut it off just in time for the holidays. It’s getting chilly out so it’s just another layer to keep you warm. I get the craze. Everyone wants in on the new fad. A few years ago in college, some people would participate in No Shave November for charity– that’s even cooler. I am all about doing something for cause and promoting awareness.

Men have a month, so why can’t women? In the past, the month of November has been considered to be No Makeup November. During My senior year in college, three women and I pledged to not wear makeup for an entire month. This was a lot harder than expected. As it is, I hardly wear makeup a few bushes of mascara and maybe a touch of blush– then we are good to go. But with No Makeup November, I want to explore who I am without hiding behind a mask. Unfortunately, our culture and society has painted us a picture that you are only beautiful with a painted face, and often that is not the case.  I understand that wearing make up is more necessary (essential) at times, and there are times when it isn’tsmile_large_large. For instance, I know when I mean meeting with my company’s executives, it’s not a bad idea to have a fresh face and to put on a touch of makeup. This isn’t to over do it.

No Makeup November is an experiment in confidence. By not wearing makeup for a month, you will naturally grow confidence in your own beauty and in your own skin. This month is a search for  answers. The goal of No Makeup November is to free women from beauty extortion. It will be challenging, but it will allow you to see the dependency makeup has on our lives.

I pledge, here and now, to not apply makeup & society’s definition of beauty to myself for the entire month. Realistically, I would love to allow myself to do this for an entire month; however, with a few business trips and a campaign on the horizon, I am pledging to not wear makeup for 20 of the 30 days in November.

Of course it will not be easy, but the outcome will be worth it. The goal: learn about myself, ideas of beauty, bringing awareness to others.

Stay beaYOUtiful.

I asked Matt if he would write a guest blog for me. I threw a few ideas at him but with the underlining being, write whatever you want. I just want you to write and to be featured. They’re your words, your thoughts, just do it. Below are the words he came up with. Matt does blog on his own time and this entry is posted up on his blog as well. Check out his blog.

i’m on the pursuit of happiness

In her previous posts, Kendal has been talking a lot about chasing dreams and doing whatever it takes to make those dreams into a reality. Her posts have been motivational for me and keep me wanting to do whatever it takes to make MY dreams a reality. As a kid growing up, I always had dreams of things I wanted to do. She touched on it a little bit about how we want to be all sorts of random things – firefighter, professional athlete, lawyer, doctor, etc., but for me I’ve always had two main dreams in life that never were associated with a career or a profession.

The first dream of mine is to have a room in my house that’s strictly a library. I have a picture of it in my head. There would be four walls filled with books. There would be ladder that went around the entire library to help reach the books on the top shelves – like the ones you see at bookstores. There would be a fireplace in there as well as a piano in the corner. The piano would preferably be black and of the “grand” variety. There would be a couple of leather chairs, one black and one white, and also a bearskin rug on the floor. I want the shelves to be filled with books. Personally, I like hardcover books the most, so the majority of them would be hardcover. It doesn’t matter what book it is or if I’ve even read it, just as long as I’m interested in it, it should be on the shelf. I’ve always been a huge supporter of books and of reading in general, so I just think it would be great to be able to sit in a room that’s fully devoted to books. Hence my reasoning behind wanting a library in my house.

The second dream of mine is to have a backyard that is devoted as a garden. My late-Grandpa had a garden. It was huge. He had everything from raspberries to pumpkins to strawberries to zucchini in it. He loved to garden and it made him happy. Being around him always made me happy. My grandparents had a place in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and every summer, my family would take a couple trips up there to spend time at “Camp Ruppert” as we coined it. Me being an only child and being a tad (okay more than a tad) hyper as a child meant that Grandpa put me to work. Whether it was picking up rocks in the garden, throwing rotten tomatoes and rocks over the fence into the woods next to their plot of land, or picking raspberries (by picking, I mean eating three and putting one in the bucket), I did it. I had so much fun doing it. I loved going up there even if it meant that I was going to have to spend time outside all day as the sunflowers and corn towered over me or if he caught a squirrel and drowned it in a bucket of water and told me that it was just sleeping (true story and I totally believed it was sleeping). Some of the best memories as a kid are from Camp Ruppert and they’ve inspired me to have a big garden like that after I retire. I’m not opposed to having a smaller garden before I retire, but I want a big garden to be one of my final accomplishments. I want to sell pumpkins to little kids before Halloween or to have frozen raspberries to put on my vanilla ice cream as a snack before bed. I want to share the joy that I had as a kid playing in the garden with everyone because joy brings people closer.

Even though I don’t know the slightest thing about how to grow a garden with so many fruits and veggies or that I don’t buy hardcover books anymore (I switched to e-books :/), I’m not going to give up those goals in my life just because times have changed or I’m uninformed on something. There’s always a solution to something so it’s just a matter of doing something about trying to find that specific solution. Heck, I can kill two birds with one stone when it comes to my two dreams. I can buy books on gardening and then I can use those books to fill up my library. Brilliant.

A great man named Michael Jordan once said, “I hope the millions of people I’ve touched have the optimism and desire to share their goals and hard work and persevere with a positive attitude.” Personally, I like this quote a lot because you can do so much more with a positive outlook in life. Life is full of ups and downs, but each time you’re down, just remember that something else is on it’s way to pick you back up. No matter how crazy your dreams may be, never give up on them. The determination you show will pay off in the end, even if it’s not for your desired goal. Things happen in weird ways. Just don’t take anything for granted and everything will turn out right in the end. Keep on smiling and everything will go as planned.
